“Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Behold, I WILL BREAK THE BOW (capitals mine) of Elam (ancient southwestern Iran), the CHIEF OF THEIR MIGHT. And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come. For I will cause Elam to be dismayed (“break down, either by violence or confusion” – Strong’s Concordance) before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I WILL BRING EVIL (capitals mine) upon them, EVEN MY FIERCE ANGER (capitals mine), saith the LORD; and I WILL SEND THE SWORD AFTER THEM, TILL I HAVE CONSUMED THEM (capitals mine): And I will set my throne in Elam, and will DESTROY FROM THENCE THE KING AND PRINCES (capitals mine), saith the LORD. But it shall come to pass IN THE LATTER DAYS (capitals mine), THAT I WILL BRING AGAIN THE CAPTIVITY (“exile” – Strong’s Concordance) OF ELAM (capitals mine), saith the LORD.”
Jeremiah 49:34-39
If I may, please let me take the above Scripture above and break it down by those words I have capitalized:
- “…I will break the bow” – A bow is used to shoot arrows. Of course, with the Book of Jeremiah believed to have been written between 629-585 B.C., the author would have had a hard time describing ballistic missiles being launched. It is obvious though that God said He would make it impossible to shoot the missiles, aka arrows. Have you watched the devastation of the Iranian ballistic missiles being destroyed? Over 15,000 Israeli/US bombs have nearly destroyed Iran’s total missile system.
- “…the chief of their might” – prior to Operation Epic Fury the ballistic missiles were the number one strength the Iranians had. After the battle began, the Iranians used this weaponry to attack their Arab neighbors, as well as Israel. So not only was God going to “…break the bow” but the bow was the strength of their military strength.
- “…I will bring evil upon them” – Bad things are going to rain down on Iran/Elam, whether it be thousands of USA and Israeli missiles destroying their military and naval defense systems, weakening their overall economy through restricting Iranian oil shipments, and bringing the other Arab nations as well as the “little Satan” and “great Satan” against them. Of course, the Iranian elites/rulers view the USA and Israel as evil, but God views them as evil.
- “…even my fierce anger” – Not only the intelligence and weapons of those fighting Iran but the FIERCE ANGER of God who has patiently endured the repeated Iranian and her local proxies’ attacks against His chosen people, the Jews, over the decades. I will take God’s fierce anger over any man-made weapons every time if I was trying to defeat my enemy.
- “…I will send the sword after them” – This to me implies God Himself instigated this retribution as a final answer to many years of Iranian conflict and aggression. He set the time and place for the “sword” (weapons) to destroy them.
- “…till I have consumed them”: – This war WILL NOT stop until God has ensured the Iranian army has been consumed. This is a promise directly from God and will be completed!
- “…destroy from thence the king and princes,” – Interestingly, at the start of Operation Epic Fury the very first thing done was to not only obliterate the ayatollah, but most of his subordinates as well. Even to this day, when the incredible intelligence shown in this war finds another “king” or “princes”, they are destroyed. By doing this, God is determined the radical Islamic regime seeking the end of the USA, Israel and the Western powers is destroyed.
- “…in the latter days” – Here we get into a little bit of confusion. First, never before in history has this prophecy already been fulfilled. Secondly, I have seen a number of people mention if this is the case, which Persia (Elam, Iran, Persia) will participate in the War of Ezekiel 38 & 39 (Could Elam be the trigger that starts the War of Gog and Magog?). Finally, as a Biblical prophecy we are told clearly all of this will happen “in the latter days”. This alone should highlight to us the significance of this war occurring today. God is not doing this to then put off the End Times by 100 to 500 years. Remember Jesus said in Matthew 24:33-34, ” So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily, I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.”
- “…that I will bring again the captivity of Elam,” – Wait a moment! Didn’t I just say all of this would lead to the downfall of the current Iranian regime. Why then would God AGAIN bring the captivity of Iran?
Recently, I saw a TV interview with a woman who escaped Iran as a young child when the shah was overthrown by the ayatollah and his radical Islamic followers in 1979. Today she lives in the US and runs a group known as the Iranian Diaspora. I was not aware that after the overthrow of the shah, more than 5 million Iranians fled the country and have settled all over the world. Just in Southern California it is estimated there are nearly 500,000 dispersed Iranians living there. Could it be with the potential for regime change in Iran that many of these people will return to Iran, thus fulfilling yet another Bible prophecy? Yes, as of the date of this article being published, there is a “ceasefire” going on between Iran, Israel and the USA. I am not adding to Bible prophecy, but history has shown us time and time again Iran will not abide by the terms and conditions being set forth and this will go on and on, even if there is a short delay in the total fulfillment of Jeremiah’s prophecy. To Iran today, Israel is still the little Satan, and the USA is the great Satan. But remember God made a Promise to Abraham, and God NEVER lies!
“And I (God) will bless them that bless thee (Abraham and his descendants), and curse him (enemies of Israel) that curseth thee: and in thee (Abraham and his Jewish descendants) shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
Genesis 12:3
Of course, if you have read my past articles on the War of Gog and Magog (The War of Gog and Magog), you are aware in the last days, Russia, Turkey AND Iran (along with a few others) will invade Israel and be totally destroyed BY God Himself. Not only will He destroy the invaders, but He will also wreak disaster on their homelands.
All of these things point to a future time when Elam/Iran will be totally annihilated. In many ways Operation Epic Fury could be the beginning of the fulfillment of Jeremiah’s prophecy or simply setting the stage for the soon coming War of Gog and Magog (Ezekiel 38 & 39). Either way, we are so close to what God has told us would be happening in the Last Days. I am personally at ease with the fact He told us beforehand what He would do and as we witness this happening we should all take comfort in knowing God has a Plan and for us to be part of that Plan, we only need to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, repent and ask him to forgive us of our sins. Oh yes, and to tell other what He told us and that is to “…therefore comfort one another with these words.”
Do not be fearful of current events but look forward to an Eternity of Love and Peace with Jesus Christ!
