The Next Great Awakening

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.”

Acts 2:17

“And it shall come to pass AFTERWARD (capitals mine), that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughter shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:”

Joel 2:28

Ever since the terrible assassination of Turning Point USA’s founder Charlie Kirk there has been an incredible uptick in young people finding Christ, going to church, buying Bibles, etc. The number of new high school and college campus Chistian organizations has grown phenomenally. Was all this prophesied? If you read the above Scriptures from both the New Testament (Acts) and Old Testament (Joel) I believe you can see it is part of God’s Plan to awaken a new generation of Christ following Believers.

All of this came to mind when I recently read a post on LinkedIn by Michael Sprague, Chaplain of the Capital Commission. With his permission, I am sharing it with you:

I recently saw this chart of the four Great Awakenings in United States history and the preachers most associated with each one.

1. 1730-1740 George Whitefield (30)/Jonathan Edwards (25)
2. 1790-1850 Charles Finney (29)
3. 1900-1910 D. L. Moody (18)
4. 1960-1975 Chuck Smith/ Billy Graham (18)

I noticed a few fascinating things from this historical overview.

1. There is a tremendous need for spiritual renewal and revival from time to time for we are a people prone to wander. In fact, if you do the math between the end of each awakening and the start of the next awakening, there are 50 years separating each awakening. Interesting!!

2. The last awakening historically finished in 1975. Again, let’s do the math. If another awakening were to start 50 years after the last one, the next awakening would start in 2025. Very interesting!!

3. It is also fascinating to look at the ages of those who were the key figures of these movements in history. Their ages are in the parentheses listed above. Most were 18-30 years old when God’s powerful anointing propelled them onto the national stage.

4. True Awakenings are not glitzy staged performances but mustard seed movements that start small and spread to true life transformation through repentance, humility, hunger for Scripture, obedience and glory going to Jesus Christ. For example, in the first Great Awakening, we were a nation with great problems of alcoholism, immorality, and low church attendance. A God inspired supernatural movement of the gospel of Grace ignited revival fire and transformed many people. A new nation was forged with many people holding a Biblical Worldview. In the fourth Great Awakening, the U.S. was struggling in the 1960’s and a Time magazine cover asked the question, “Is God dead?” A few years later the cover read, “The Jesus Revolution” and 80,000 young people gathered at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas to worship Jesus Christ.

We certainly have concerns today about drift in our country. There is a need for a new fresh move of the Spirit today. Could it be starting in 2025? There are some good indicators that something is happening:

Stats
1. Bible Sales up 41.6% since 2022.
2. Religious App Downloads up 79.5% since 2019.
3. Song Streaming Contemporary Christian Music up 50% since 2019.
4. Gen Z and Millennials now lead church attendance in the USA. Think of that-the generation that has been accused of being lazy, playing video games while living in their parents’ basement is now the generation attending church more faithfully and in greater numbers than my generation. Praise God.

A new great awakening? All I can say is “Do it again Lord! Do it again! Do it again!”

Hopefully you see the same comparison in Michael Sprague’s posting I do and agree this matches exactly with prophecies of the Bible. A loving and gracious God Almighty wants us to be aware of His Plans and to know the End is Coming Soon! With that in mind, it is up to each of us to do what Jesus told us to do and that is to “…therefore comfort one another with these words.” And what are those Words?

“Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation (7-year Tribulation), which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.”

Revelation 3:10.

May God Bless you as we all try to tell others of what awaits those who Believe in Him!
