“And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make a name, lest (in case) we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”
Early in the Bible (but after the Great Flood of Noah) we see a situation where mankind determined to go out and build a city AND a tower that would reach all the way to Heaven! Why? Because they wanted to make a name for themselves! Even if they were to be later scattered throughout the entire world, completion of this self-determined, narcissistic accomplishment made them think it would make them well known. Who were they trying to be known to but God in Heaven?! The only way to be equal to Him was by having a tower that would enable them free access to His home in Heaven. I find it interesting the Jewish word babel is sometimes translated as “the gates of heaven”. I doubt it is an accident the Tower of Babel is also associated with the tower designed to get mankind to the “the gates of heaven”. Apparently, they believed by building this tower it would take them directly to the gates of heaven instead of by following God’s Laws and Commandments of them! Moreover, this idea was EXACTLY the same which got Satan thrown out of Heaven in the first place. He WAS NOT equal to God even though he thought he was! What does the Bible tell us about Lucifer/Satan’s Fall from Heaven?
“How art thou fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN (capitals mine), I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. I WILL ASCEND ABOVE THE HEIGHTS OF THE CLOUDS: I WILL BE LIKE THE MOST HIGH (capitals mine).”
Kinda sounds like their goal was the same!
Now prior to this happening it should be noted that all men of the earth spoke the same language. As stated in Genesis 11:1, “And the whole earth was of ONE LANGUAGE (capitals mine), and of one speech.” If you remember the story of the Flood, only those saved from it were all members of Noah’s immediate family. Obviously, they all spoke the same language. As they dispersed AFTER the Flood and began to repopulate the world as they were directed by God to do (to go and “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.” – Genesis 9:1), there was no reason for them to be speaking a different language (or build a tower, for that matter). Generations later we were left with a much larger world population, ALL speaking ONE language. Why is this important?
By speaking one language they were able to communicate easily with each other which would have also kept one very common culture. They would all come together in similar harmony. This allowed for a population to be more closely aligned. This also then allowed for Satan to work his evil ways easier in convincing them that God was not their solution and because IF they were ONE they could resolve their own issues without God because they were together EQUAL to God. The goal of the people was not to glorify God and lift up His name but to build a name for themselves. Even God said:
“And the Lord said, Behold, the people is ONE (capitals mine), and they all have one language; and this they begin to do: and NOW NOTHING WILL BE RESTRAINED FROM THEM (capitals mine), which they have imagined to do.”
God showed us when people are united in purpose, they can sometimes accomplish impossible feats, BOTH GOOD AND BAD. This is why coming together as Believers in the body of Christ is so important in our joint efforts to accomplish His ultimate purposes for us on earth. However, having similar ideas or strategy in worldly matters can also be VERY destructive. Believe it or not, in God’s plan for us, division in worldly matters is sometimes preferred over human accomplishments not condoned by God. Because of this, God sometimes does intervene to divide us in our activities. In order to reduce man’s pride and arrogance, God may sometimes confuse and divide man’s own plans, so they don’t ultimately try to overstep God’s plans for them. What then did God do?
“Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one’s speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.”
In His infinite wisdom, knowing the danger awaiting those building the tower, He “confounded” (changed) their language. No longer could they understand each other. In some ways it would be similar to being at a global conference with all speaking English and then all at once having everyone go back to speaking their native tongues. Maybe we could understand bits of Spanish or French but most would not know what was being said if the speaker started talking in Farsi or Mandarin. No longer would the conference be of value and we would all have to go back home! That is exactly what happened in Babel. They were initially united in building a Tower to the heavens to be equal to God but when God changed their language, “…they left off (stopped building) to build the city.” Ever since they left and dispersed there have been many languages spoken which evolved eventually into different cultures, nations and governments.
So, how does this relate to the very distinct probability the Tower of Babel is symbolically being rebuilt today? Think of what life was like only 30-40 years ago. Today, there are many countries or groups of countries (e.g. European Union) advocating for “open borders” which basically says ANYONE can come here to live, work and play. In doing this the original culture of that country is being fundamentally changed. Just ask Sweden! Communism in the former Soviet Union and China foresaw a world with only one government and NO religion. Also, the internet with its ability to translate one language seamlessly into another, has brought us closer to a one language world. Economically, while today the US dollar is the foundation for a balanced, global currency exchange, although as I said in my post Bitcoin and Biblical End Times Prophecies, a global economy and single monetary system (through the Mark of the Beast) is not very far off.
This reminds me when Mikhail Gorbachev’s book Perestroika (Russian for “restructuring”), was written in 1987 upon the fall of the Soviet Union, he said ultimately the only way to peace and to finally eliminate all the world’s problems was a global government, a single world economy AND one religion. This is EXACTLY what is prophesied to happen in the Bible for the LAST DAYS. I can’t make this stuff up!!!
To me it is obvious when the people began to build the Tower of Babel they had a leader whose name was Satan. He was trying to redo what had previously failed him. In the Last Days we know once again Satan will attempt to rule the world through the anti-christ and usurp the Supreme Power of God. But, before he can finally achieve this goal the very make-up of mankind must be more receptive to his evil message:
“This knows also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; HAVING A FORM OF GODLINESS (capitals mine), but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
2 Timothy 3:1-5
I doubt I could find one reader that would disagree with the description of what mankind is becoming and how it is changing drastically towards what was said above. Polls show fewer people believe in the Bible, go to church and more people believe WE alone can solve our problems if we could somehow eradicate the major differences between us. But, only God can do that! As Jesus prophetically said in Matthew 19:26, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” We need to stop fighting God’s plan for us, exalt Him above ourselves and anxiously await Jesus’s Coming and Millennium Rule of the world. It will not be easy for Believers as the majority of people in the world will believe they can resolve all the world’s problems instead of relying on God. But, take comfort in knowing Satan failed before in his attempt to be equal to God and he, and his followers, WILL FAIL AGAIN! If you agree, please join me in Sharing/Liking this post with your friends and families on Facebook and/or LinkedIn so we can do as instructed by Jesus Himself and that is to “…therefore, comfort one another with these words.”
